Nana-kusa gayu is rice porridge that contains seven types of wild grass.
These are what is called the spring of berbs.
Herbs of spring : Seri, Nazuna, Gogyo, Hakobera, Hotokenoza, Suzuna, Suzushiro
I'll discuss each.
*Seri
Scientific name of Seri is Oenanthe javanica (Blume) DC. and called water dropwort in English. It grows in damp places, such as swamps and footpath. It has a unique flavor.
This is sold in supermarkets in January in Japan.
*Nazuna
Scientific name of Nazuna is Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik. and called Shepherd's Purse in English. It grows in dilapidated location.
In Japan, it is said to work in antipyretic and abdominal pain and hemostasis, it has been used as a folk medicine.
*Gogyo
Scientific name of Gogyo is Gnaphalium affine D. Don and called Cudweed in English. It grows in the beaten track of roadside and paddy in winter.
The tea made from the leaves and it is said to work in the internal organs and cough.
*Hakobera
Scientific name of Hakobera is Stellaria media and called chickweed in English. It grows in the beaten track, lowland and grassland and it creates a dense community.
*Hotokenoza
Scientific name of Hotokenoza is Lapsana apogonoides Maxim. and called Nipplewort in English. It grows in damp places, such as swamps and footpath.
This plant is called Koonitabirako now in Japan. There is a plant that is the other referred to as Hotokenoza. But you cannot eat it because it plants with a poison.
*Suzuna
Scientific name of Suzuna is Brassica rapa L. var. rapa and called Turnip in English. It is artificially grown in the field. It can be grown even in poor areas of nutrition on the ground.
*Suzushiro
Scientiic name of Suzushiro is Raphanus sativus L. var. and called Radish in English. It is artificially grown in the field. Radish is an herb that there is detoxification and blood clot prevention action.
